Formula
gallons = barrels x 31, ounces = barrels x 3,968,
pints = barrels x 248. The pint figure is the theoretical maximum: real yield is lower once you account
for tank bottoms, transfers and foam.
Which barrel?
Three different "barrels" turn up in search results, and mixing them up is the most common conversion mistake. This site always means the US beer barrel of 31 US gallons, the one used for beer production and federal excise records (27 CFR 25.11). An oil barrel is 42 US gallons. A US fluid barrel, used for some other liquids, is 31.5 US gallons.
